Cheggio and S. Bernardo Oratory

On foot         Great Interest: Religion

Cheggio is a large pasture situated on a gentle slope in the north of Antronapiana, at the entrance of Valle Loranco. The place name "Cheggio" means open and sunny place. Its favorable position has promoted the building of several temporary houses. The daily exposure to the risk of falls along the steep slopes of the mountains overhanging it during the cutting and transport of grass led the inhabitants to search for a spiritual protection, building a small church. In the first decades of the 17th century there was already a small chapel dedicated to St Bernard of Menthon, one of the most famous saints of the Christian world, considered protector of the mountain dwellers and today also of mountaineers; after Pozzuoli landslide of 1650, the oratory was built.
